Heath's death: the aftermath

Heath Ledger

As friends, family and fans around the globe continue to grieve for Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger, the rumour mill has - all too predictably - gone into overdrive about what led to the actor's death.

The findings from yesterday's autopsy proved inconclusive - and police and medical examiners say it may take up to 10 days to uncover the full story. Much has been made of the fact that a rolled-up $20 note was found in the New York apartment where Heath died. The money has now been taken away for further tests, but no illegal drugs were discovered on the premises.

Meanwhile, the star's former partner, actress Michelle Williams, arrived back in New York overnight, together with the couple's two-year-old daughter Matilda. The pair were in Sweden when they heard the news - and Michelle is understandably said to be devastated.

Another of Heath's ex-girlfriends, Naomi Watts, cancelled all press and publicity appearances at the Sundance Film Festival.

In other news, it's been revealed that the masseuse who found the actor unconscious in bed on Tuesday afternoon called US star Mary-Kate Olsen before dialling 911. The reason? She knew Mary-Kate was a friend of Heath's, and wanted her expert guidance about what to do.

Mary-Kate reportedly called her own New York security "people" to head round to the flat, but also advised the masseuse to call the police - which she then did straight away. However, efforts to revive the actor were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead soon after the emergency services arrived.
